XR Research  Community Guidelines

Last updated June 30, 2025

NVC platform research partners agree to practice responsible research, protecting the privacy of those who wear or use the research devices (and, if your use of the research devices records or otherwise tracks any environmental or third-party personal data, those who don’t wear or use the research devices). These NVC Research Community Guidelines outline proper use of NVC Research Device(s) (“research devices” or “the devices”) for research. You may have additional responsibilities under any terms or contracts you (or the entity authorizing you to use the device) have with us or other parties. Violating the NVC Research Community Guidelines can result in, among other things, expulsion from the program and forfeiture of research devices.

Your standing in the NVC platform research community and use of the devices require that you:

  • Maintain a respectful and responsible research environment by:
    • Complying with all applicable laws that pertain to your conduct and research
    • Respecting the rights of others, including privacy and intellectual property rights, including (in each instance to the extent applicable):
      • In the event you capture individual data in the course of your research, ensuring that you provide appropriate notice to affected individuals, and that you obtain appropriate consent of such individuals, in each case as may be required under applicable law
      • Stopping use of the devices when non-users ask if using a research device with the capability to capture personal information of bystanders
      • Complying with any regional requirements for additional bystander signaling, if applicable
        • Please keep in mind that research partners are the controller when meeting GDPR or UK GDPR requirements, which includes the responsibility to ensure that it is clear to bystanders who you work for via your transparency/notice measures
      • Providing contact details to inquiring non-users or bystanders who want to receive more information about the research
      • Not using the device in any private venue or building without appropriate authorization
      • Not recording sensitive activities or in sensitive places if using a research device with the capability to capture PII of non-users, including restrooms, medical or health facilities, bedrooms or hotel rooms, religious facilities or prayer rooms, locker/changing rooms, private homes (without consent of all household members)
  • Adhere to responsible data management practices by:
    • Using the research devices to collect data only when you have a valid research purpose
    • Ensuring all research participants have received appropriate training
    • Creating and maintaining secure data management practices, such as deleting unnecessary or unused data, factory resetting devices between wearers, using and maintaining secure systems and software when processing research device data
    • Implementing applicable data privacy practices, such as setting retention periods, deletion and data access protocols, and if using a research device with the capability to capture PII obfuscating or de-identifying said PII;
    • If using a research device with the capability to capture PII, not attempting to identify any non-user or bystander whose image or personally identifiable information have been blurred or obfuscated and not attempting to associate any research device data with any particular person or identifier
    • Complying with reasonable deletion requests, when requested by a participant or other non-user, without undue delay
